            LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore attack Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) scored the game-winning goal late in the second half and the Lynchburg College field hockey team held on to defeat Washington & Lee University 1-0 Wednesday evening in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament semifinals.

 

            The Hornets out the pressure on the General defense in the first half, holding a 15-1 edge in shots, but couldn’t convert as the game remained scoreless into intermission. Following a penalty corner, Weir tapped in a ball from senior attack Samantha Howard (Fairfax Station, VA/W.T. Woodson) at the 59:52 mark to open a 1-0 lead. The Generals forced a penalty corner in the closing 45 seconds, but a Grace McGee shot to the top left corner hit the side of the cage.

 

            Lynchburg held a 26-3 edge in shots for the game and also had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Tara Rubenstein made eight saves for the Generals (11-7).

 

            Top-seededEasternMennoniteUniversity defeated #4 Randolph-MaconCollege 2-1 in the other semifinal contest, and will host the Hornets Saturday in the ODAC finals. Game-time has yet to be announced.
