Lynchburg Men Defeat Va. Wesleyan 3-2 in OT

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Freshman Michael Abbonzio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham Sr.) scored the game-winning goal less than seven minutes into overtime Wednesday evening as the Lynchburg College men’s soccer team defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 3-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

The Marlins led 1-0 at the half, until a Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) tally at 63:58 tied the game. After a VWC goal by Brandon Massie, Phil Francois (West Windsor, NJ/Princeton) fed Donald Hart (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) to tie the game with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

Abbonzio netted the game winner after a cross from Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) to complete the upset of the Marlins for LC’s first conference victory of the season.

The Hornets out-shot Va. Wesleyan 24-14, and LC keeper Marcus Jordan  (Lynchburg, VA/Germantown) made three stops. Kyle Williams made seven saves for VWC. Virginia Wesleyan falls to 10-2 on the season and 3-2 in conference action.

Lynchburg (6-4-1/1-2-1 ODAC) hosts Eastern Mennonite University Saturday at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field as a part of Homecoming Weekend.
