Lynchburg Defeats Ferrum 2-1

FERRUM, VA - Senior forward John Witt (Bedford, VA/Liberty) scored the game winning goal in the 44th minute to send the Lynchburg College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win on the road against Ferrum College.

Sophomore midfielder Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) opened the scoring just two minutes into the game off a corner kick delivered by junior midfielder Jared Melot (Reading, PA/Antietam). Matt Larkin of Ferrum notched the score at 1-1 in the 42nd minute. Witt then kicked in the game-winner shortly before the half as sophomore midfielder Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) and freshman midfielder Cam Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) teamed together for an assist.

Outstanding goalie play was the name of the game for Ferrum. Lynchburg fired off 18 shots against the Panthers, but Chris McDonnell recorded 11 saves and allowed just two goals to keep the game tight throughout the contest. LC outshot Ferrum 18-3 and held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Hornets travel to Raleigh, NC, this weekend to participate in the Espirt DIII Tournament. LC faces Emory University Saturday at 1 p.m. and Salisbury University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
