Exhibits:

Selected Works of Pierre Daura- Catalan-American Modernist (selections from the Lynchburg College collection) Gallery II. Pierre Daura was born February 21, 1896, in Minorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. He received his formal art education at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, known as "La Llotja." His teachers included Jose Ruiz Blasco (Picasso's father) and Joseph Calvo. Daura pursued an ambitious career during the 1920s and 1930s and exhibited regularly in Paris, Barcelona, and elsewhere in Europe, where his work was well received by critics. Daura's output in painting, drawing, engraving and sculpture was prolific. In 1939, Daura and his family came to Virginia and were prevented from returning to France because of the outbreak of World War II. They settled on family owned property in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, a setting which would furnish new vistas for landscape paintings. Although the main body of Daura's work was strongly rooted in the traditional and the celebration of nature, he valued the artist's freedom to be individualistic. This exhibition includes oils, watercolors, engravings, and sculpture from the collection of the Daura Gallery, Lynchburg College.

Stories of the Messengers: Haydar Hatemi - Created in the aftermath of 9/11/01, this exhibition provides a departure point for dialogue, contemplation, and healing through the work of artist Haydar Hatemi. In response to an internal question on how one furthers and creates dialogue, understanding, and tolerance, this renowned world artist, born in Iran, spent two years studying similarities and common messages in four sacred texts, The Avesta, The Torah, The Qur'an, and The Bible. His work celebrates shared beliefs founded within the varied world religions. In Hatemi's own words, "God's Messengers were the protectors of peace and order on Earth and their stories have many lessons for us to learn. I hope my art can be the common medium where people of all faiths can realize that they have more similarities than they have differences." The messages from these sacred texts, rendered in intricate and spectacular detail, are united to provide incredible imagery which delights the eye and underlines the commonality of these important foundations of our respective cultures. This exhibition is loaned by the Headley-Whitney Museum, Lexington, Kentucky.
