The username and password you have been given, together with your ID card, are your personal keys to a variety of valuable Information Technology Services. You need to protect these keys just as you would protect the keys to your car and your residence hall room.

Protect your ID card - keep it with you at all times. Protect your authentication credentials (that's the term we use to describe your username and password). The three tips below should help you get started:

  • Take time NOW to change your password. To change your password, simply follow the instructions that appear below.
  • Keep your password private. Since everyone on campus has one, no one should need to borrow yours for any reason. Sharing passwords is a violation of the Computer Equipment/Facilities Usage Policy.
  • If you think someone is using your password without your permission, change it immediately. If you suspect foul play, contact the Information Technology Services office at 8350 with your name and social security number. Your password will be reset to its initial value within 24 hours after you call.

To Change Your Login Password

  1. Sign on to any campus computer.
  2. On your keyboard, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
  3. Click Change Password.
  4. In Old Password, type your current network password.  Only you know what your current password is! Your initial password appears on your Welcome Page and will usually be an easily remembered number such as your birth date (yyyymmdd) or long distance authorization code. Remember... your password is case-sensitive; you have to type it exactly or it will not work.
  5. Select a new password and type it in the New Password: box. Asterisks will appear as you type your new password. Some thoughts regarding your new password:
    • It must be at least six characters long.
    • It cannot contain spaces or punctuation.
    • It is case sensitive. For example, if you select "Freddy" as your new password, you will always need to type the uppercase "F" and the lowercase "reddy" when you log on.
    • It should not be easily guessed... things like your name or nickname, student ID number, phone number, etc., are bad choices.
  6. Type the password you entered in the Confirm New Password box. This helps you make certain that the keyboard did not malfunction while you were typing.
  7. Click OK.
