Note: Network registration is required before you will be able to access the campus network!

Configuring your Network Connection (ALL SYSTEMS)

What you need to get started:

  • a computer
  • an Ethernet card (available for a fee at Information Technology and Resources)
  • your Windows 95/98 or Windows 2000 CDROM disk (there is no CD required for MAC systems)
  • a network cable (available for a fee at Information Technology and Resources)

Step 1: Install Ethernet Card (Network Card)

If you had a network connection on campus last year and didn't remove your network card over the summer, you can proceed to Plug Network Cable Into the Wall Jack below.

If you ordered your computer with an Ethernet Card, it should already be installed and you can proceed to Plug Network Cable Into the Wall Jack below.

You can install the card yourself following the manufacturer's installation instructions. OR, you can schedule an appointment for Information Technology and Resources to do the installation for you. These installations will be done on a first-come/first-served basis at an installation charge of $75. To make an appointment, call extension 8350.

Step 2: Plug Network Cable Into the Wall Jack

Plug your network cable into the network jack (see the figure at right) in your dorm room. If you are the only person in your room with a network connection, use the lowest numbered jack. For example (using the image on the right), the lowest number is 110-A - since A comes before B.

The other end of the cable should be plugged into the jack of the network card installed in your computer.

NOTE: Most of the dorm network jacks have two connections as shown. Most telephone jacks have only one.
