Taking positive and practical action to reduce our oil-dependency

Who We Are

We live, Rob Hopkins* writes, in "an oil dependent world, and have gotten to this level of dependency in a very short space of time, using vast reserves of oil in the process--without thinking ahead to plan for when the supply is not so plentiful."

Most of us avoid thinking about what happens when oil runs out, but there are things we can do right now that will affect how well we make the TRANSITION to a more self-reliant, carbon-neutral life, like re-thinking our communities so that we grow more of our own food, generate more of our own power and build our houses and infrastructure from local materials.

The L.C. Transition Group is dedicated to thinking about how we as individuals and as a campus community can take matters into our own hands and take positive and practical action to reduce our oil-dependency.

Our group is open to all interested persons--you need not already have a bicycle, 5 chickens or a 12X15 edible garden. We help each other acquire skills (like beer brewing!) and we assist each other in creating big projects. Drop by one of our meetings. Follow our blog--there are many knowledgeable and interesting people on LC campus and in Lynchburg who are becoming self-sufficient.

Colin Beavan To Speak

Posted on 08/31/2009
This Friday, at 7pm at Randolph College, Colin Beavan will speak  on his new book No Impact Man.  He is a 'guilty liberal' who who finally snaps and starts to really live in a conscious way (while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-loving wife along for the ride).  The family lives in New York City and Colin is traveling around the U.S. to promote the book and raise awareness of how each one of us can battle global warming with small, daily changes to our lifestyle.

Many of you may already subscribe to his daily blog.  If you are not familiar with him, you can check him out at:  http://noimpactman.typepad.com/blog/
