About Us Academics Admissions Athletics Giving to the College Graduate Studies Library Student Life

The theatre major has been designed for students who wish to pursue careers in an array of arts and entertainment areas–including, but not limited to commercial, educational and community theatre, theme parks, museums, mass media, sales, management, and teaching. The program also provides an excellent base for advanced study in graduate or professional schools of theatre.

All theatre majors follow a thirty-six hour core curriculum spread over their four-year course of study that provides a well-rounded education of and respect for the ensemble nature and totality of theatre art. Other elective courses allow a major to create an emphasis in a specific area of the discipline. Students actively apply their classroom education by participating in the College’s main stage theatre productions, student-generated productions in the studio theatre, the dance-theatre showcases, and through scenic, lighting, costume, and box office student employment opportunities. Majors are also encouraged to study in other disciplines in the School of Communication and the Arts, as well as in the English Program. Students regularly interview, audition for, and find work in professional summer theatres.

Auditions and backstage opportunities in theatre productions are open to all students regardless of major or year.

WELCOME!

The Lynchburg College Theatre Program prides itself on personal attention to students.  We believe well-rounded study produces intelligent, respectful artists.  Hands-on projects are a part of many of our classes and our students gain a variety of practical skills working on our plays and dance showcases.

Students can earn academic credit just by participating in productions. There are also student employment positions available in our program.

A theatre degree provides valuable and marketable skills appealing to a wide spectrum of employers.  By promoting creativity, discipline, leadership, and the ability to work with others towards a defined goal and deadline, the Theatre Program provides education and training for any career that may be pursued by a liberal arts graduate.  Check out the Career Paths page to see some of the jobs held by our theatre alumni.  You can also check out the current issue of StageNotes for class notes on our alumni.

If you plan a visit to our campus, please let us know.  We can arrange to take you on a tour of our theatre complex and introduce you to our faculty and students.  You can sit in on a class and go to lunch with our current students.  Perhaps you can visit while we are in performance with a main stage production, dance showcase, or our student directed and designed studio theatre series. See the Now Showing page for dates and times of performances to plan your trip around one of our shows.

I hope you will keep Lynchburg College in mind as you plan your future. Please contact us if we may be of any help.

Sincerely,
Jeff Wittman
Professor and Program Coordinator
