School Counseling Program

Dr. Jeanne Booth with counselor education studentCoordinator: Dr. Jeanne Booth

This program is designed to provide schools with highly skilled specialists in counseling. Special emphasis is placed on counseling, consultation skills, guidance curriculum development, and the coordination of guidance program components. Students in the School Counseling program are prepared to meet the K-12 guidelines required by the Virginia Department of Education.

At the elementary school level, counselors develop skills for meeting the needs of young children. Strategies for developing programs that are infused into the total educational process and serve the total school community are emphasized. Professional preparation for middle school counselors focuses on the unique needs of middle school-age students. The middle school counselor must have skills in working with groups, functioning as a school team member, and consulting with teachers and parents. For students committed to working with high school students, emphasis is placed upon the understanding of the secondary school student, developing skills in individual and group counseling, working with families, providing career development experiences, and assisting students in meeting developmental challenges and decisions.

From Recent Alumni:

"I believe that the Counselor Education Program at Lynchburg College gave me a realistic view of what a school counselor does through classes, guest speakers, visits to schools, practicum, and internship. All of the counseling professors at LC are well connected to, and utilize appropriately, other counselors who are experts in particular areas. The professors are active in the local, state, and national professional organizations, which gives students a clear vision of the importance of advocating for our profession and networking benefits. I appreciate greatly the amount of time and effort that my professors put into furthering my education!"
- Stephanie E. Moehlenkamp, M.Ed '06, Virginia Counselors Association Treasurer, Professional School Counselor at Rustburg Elementary School

"The faculty in the LC graduate programs provided me with extensive support from beginning to graduation. I was impressed with their level of experience and knowledge about the school counseling field and how they applied that to their instruction. I feel better prepared to do my job because of my interactions with the LC graduate faculty."
- John Thomas, M.Ed '07, Professional School Counselor at Jefferson Forest High School
