Professional/Research Interests
Although I am primarily interested in teaching composition, I also have an interest in Harlem-Renaissance poet Anne Spencer. I serve on the Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum Board and have integrated service learning (and primary source research!) into my English classes as we explore the life, writings, and historical time period of this poet who spent nearly all of her life in Lynchburg.
The Anne Spencer Museum, with funding from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy, recently released the publication, Anne Spencer: "Ah, how poets sing and die!": A collection of her poems with commentary by Nina V. Salmon.
From the "Acknowledgments" page: "The real guiding force for the project was Nina Salmon, Assistant Professor of English at Lynchburg College and member of the Board for the Anne Spencer Memorial Foundation. Lynchburg College's Center for the History and Culture of Central Virginia provided the genesis for Nina's research on Anne Spencer when she lectured as part of the "Turn of the Century" symposium. Her work provides a close look at this remarkable woman in relationship to her poetry, her garden, her convictions, and her strong personality."
The book is for sale in the LC Bookstore. All proceeds benefit the Anne Spencer Museum. Additionally, the house is open for tours by appointment. This is a great stop for visiting parents! Call me to arrange a tour or call 434/845-1313.

Beyond the classroom, I enjoy the challenge of raising three sons, ages 12-16. We spend much of our time at soccer, football, and lacrosse games and cross country and swim meets. My husband Jerry teaches high school history at Brookville High School. In addition to my sons' sporting events, I'm an enthusiastic Hornet fan and frequently attend my LC students' games, matches, and meets.
