Physics Faculty and Staff

Lynchburg College has four active faculty members in physics. From left to right:
Julius Sigler
Dr. Sigler has been associated with the college for 52 years and is currently in his fourth year as Dean of the College. He earned his B.S. in physics from LC in 1962 and received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Virginia in 1967.
John Eric Goff
Dr. Goff came to LC in the fall of 2002 and is currently in his eighth year as the chair of the physics department. He received his B.S. in physics and mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 1992 and took his Ph.D. in physics from Indiana University in 1999.
Neal Sumerlin
Dr. Sumerlin has been an active member of the chemistry department since coming to LC in 1976. He finished his undergraduate work in professional chemistry at Ouachita Baptist University in 1972 and earned his Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from the University of Arkansas in 1977. Professor Sumerlin teaches our astronomy courses and runs the observatory.
Chinthaka Liyanage
Dr. Liyanage arrived at LC in the fall of 2008. He earned a B.S. in physics from the University of Colombo in 2002, an M.S. in physics from Bowling Green State University in 2004, and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Toledo in 2008.
