Students who show documented financial need may be eligible for funding from the College, the state, and federal governments and possibly through private sources. Examples of these additional resources for financial aid are briefly described below.

Grants

Lynchburg College Grants

  • Eligible students will be automatically awarded Lynchburg College need-based grants upon acceptance to Lynchburg College and receipt of the FAFSA results.

State Programs

  • Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) - is a non-need-based state grant available to all Virginia Residents who attend a private college full-time in the Commonwealth of Virginia (VTAG is estimated at $2,750 for the 2007-2008 academic year).

  • Virginia College Scholarship Assistance Program (CSAP) -   awards grants up to $5,000 per academic year to undergraduate residents of Virginia who have exceptional need and who carry a full-time course load.
  • State Programs for Non-Virginia Residents - available to students whose home states provide grants for residents to attend College. Some states that offer portable need-based grants are Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  Please check with your local state agency.

Federal Programs

  • Federal Pell Grants -  provide assistance to exceptionally needy students in amounts up to $4,050 for the 2006-2007 academic year.  The 2007-2008 award has not yet been determined. 
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
    (FSEOG) -  
    provide assistance up to $4,000 for one academic year to exceptionally needy students who qualify for the Federal Pell Grants.

Loans

  • Federal Perkins Loans - are need-based loans available through a campus-based program funded jointly by the federal government and Lynchburg College.

  • Federal Stafford Loans - provide up to $3,500 for first year students beginning July 1, 2007, $4,500 for second year students, and $5,500 in subsequent years of undergraduate study. Students who demonstrate need through the FAFSA are eligible for subsidized loans, students who do not demonstrate need based upon the FAFSA results are eligible for unsubsidized loans.

  • Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)- are specifically created for parents who prefer to use a credit-based loan to pay any remaining balance due the College after financial aid.

Employment

  • Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) - is a federally funded, need-based student employment program to assist students who need extra earnings from employment to help meet college costs.
  • College Work-Study Program (CWS) - mirrors the FWS program but is funded by Lynchburg College.

Private Programs

Community organizations sometimes make funds available to students on the basis of academic merit or planned field of study. A high school guidance counselor will know if such programs are available. Inquire at your church and with any civic organizations, labor unions, or parents' employers.

FastWEB (Financial Aid Search Through the WEB) is the largest and most complete scholarship search on the Internet. It provides access to a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and student loans available to students.

Through Your Employer
