First-Year Student Checklist
For August 2013
Get ready for college in 7 easy steps!
Step 1: Complete the Schedule Planning Form
When it's due: May 15, or one week after we receive your reservation deposit.
Once we have your Schedule Planning Form, we'll begin to create an initial class schedule customized for you and you will be able to reserve your spot for SOAR.
Step 2: Reserve Your Place at SOAR
When it's due: May 15; sessions remain open until filled.
When is SOAR? June 20-21, June 24-25, June 27-28, August 18-19
Student Orientation And Registration helps you get ready for college. For your convenience, there are multiple dates for you to choose from. Once you have completed your Schedule Planning Form, you may reserve your place at SOAR.
SOAR begins at noon on the first day: start at Schewel Hall for registration when you get to campus. SOAR ends by 5 p.m. the second day.
- International students and students living overseas will attend SOAR in August.
- Westover Fellows must attend SOAR either on June 20-21 or August 18-19.
If you have a conflict that will prevent you from attending SOAR, it is important that you contact firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible.
Step 3: Submit Your Health Information Form
When it's due: July 31, or you may bring it with you to June SOAR.
All full-time undergraduate students need to complete the health form, regardless of whether you live on or off campus. Health forms must be completed and returned to the Health Center office by July 31.
For more information about the Health Center and details about the form, visit the Health Center web pages or call 434.544.8357.
Step 4: Attend SOAR
When: June 20-21, June 24-25, June 27-28, or August 18-19 (International students and students living overseas have priority for this session.)
Get everything ready, make some new friends, and learn the LC ropes so you'll feel comfortable when you arrive for the start of the semester.
Each SOAR session begins at noon on the first day and typically ends by 5 p.m. on the second day.
NOTE: All students, including commuter students, will spend the evening in Tate Hall, one of the residence halls in the FYE community, and should bring a pillow, blanket, change of clothes, and personal toiletries for their overnight experience. Families and guests are not allowed to stay in the residence hall overnight but should consult our Community Lodging Partners page for nearby hotels with discounts for LC families.
Step 5: Complete Your Housing Preference Form
When it's due: July 8
The housing preference form allows you to request which residence hall you would like to live in as well as a roommate preference. If you meet someone at SOAR and both of you would like to be roommates, you may make the request before the assignment process occurs. Assignments will be made around the week of July 22 and you will be notified through your Lynchburg College email.
Step 6: Enjoy the Common Reading Experience
When it's due: August 19
The Common Reading experience provides first-year students a similar academic experience before beginning at Lynchburg College.
All first-year students are asked to read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, a New York Times Bestseller, which has been selected by faculty, staff, and students as our Common Reading. Students will discuss the book in a small group setting with their academic advisor during Hornet Days. This is a great way to start their LC academic experience and to have a common topic to discuss with each other upon arrival in the fall.
Step 7: New Student Check-in and Move-in
When: August 19
Important note: Students attending the August 18-19 SOAR session will complete check-in and move in August 17. Students trying out for soccer (men's and women's), volleyball, or field hockey may be checking in and moving in earlier. Please contact your coach or the Athletic Department for more information.
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.: New Student Check-In, Schewel Hall
Upon arrival, stop by Schewel Hall to receive keys, loft kits, Hornet Days schedule, and valuable information needed to begin your journey at LC. Members of the campus community will be available to help you move into your residence halls.
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Lunch available in dining hall (parents and guests may pay at the door)
5 - 6:30 p.m.: Dinner available in dining hall (parents and guests may pay at the door)
