The Lynchburg College Choral Union (LCCU) is a premier choral ensemble that performs choral master works from all musical periods. The auditioned college/community choral group is composed of Lynchburg College students, faculty, staff, alumni and community singers who perform for audiences in Central Virginia and beyond.
Since its inception in 2002, the Choral Union’s mission has been to enrich the cultural life of Central Virginia, provide unique choral experiences for singers and promote understanding among peoples of different cultures. LCCU is one of many community outreach programs offered by Lynchburg College.
Recent performance selections include Bach’s Motets, Jesu meine Freude and Lobet den Herrn; Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Requiem, and Te Deum; Haydn’s Mass in Time of War and Thereienmesse; Beethoven’s Mass in C; Mendelssohn’s Elijah; Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus; Orff’s Carmina Burana; Caldara’s Stabat Mater; Durufle’s Requiem; Ray’s Gospel Mass, and Hailstork’s I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes; as well as smaller choral octavo selections such as Brahm’s Vier Zigeunerlieder, Nelhybel’s Estampie Natalis, Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Songs, Hansen’s Song of Democracy, and other artistic choral works.

Invitation to Choral Union Membership
Membership in LCCU is open to advanced singers who have formal vocal training and/or good singing techniques, good music reading skills and the ability to take full responsibility for learning music.
Members must be willing to make the choir a top priority and sing for the entire season. They are expected to attend and be prompt for all rehearsals, performances and other events (i.e. fundraising events, concert tours and special performances). Partial and selective participation based on an individual’s musical preferences is strongly discouraged.
If you are interested in joining the Choral Union, contact Dr. Jong King, LCCU director, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 434.544.8443 to schedule your audition, which will consist of the following:
- Singing five-note ascending/descending scales (in slow and fast tempi) with support from the piano.
- Singing your voice part from passages in Handel’s Messiah (bar 1 to the down beat of bar 20 of the No. 7, “And He Shall Purify”).
- Listening while four or five notes are played on the piano, which you will be asked to sing back (to check your pitch and rhythm memory).
Membership dues are $50 per semester for non-student members. Membership dues are waived for LC students because they register for the Choral Union as a class.
Rehearsals are held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Helen Wood Recital Hall in the lower level of Snidow Chapel on the Lynchburg College campus.
Friends of the Lynchburg College Choral Union
Membership dues and concert ticket sales are important sources of revenue for the LCCU. However, revenue from ticket sales and dues does not cover all concert expenses. Over the years, many generous donors have helped us keep ticket prices low, so all who wish to attend our concerts may do so. Individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations that provide financial and in-kind support to the Choral Union are Friends of the Lynchburg College Choral Union and are recognized in our concert programs. All contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law.
If you would like to make a contribution to the Choral Union, contact the music department at 434.544.8344.
The Conductor's Council serves as the governing body of the Choral Union. Officers are members of the choir and serve two-year terms.
