Fall 2009 Latin Class - with instructor Dr. Elza Tiner

Lynchburg College offers a full range of preliminary Latin courses to meet the General Education language requirement:

  • LATN 101 - Elementary Latin I
  • LATN 102 - Elementary Latin II
  • LATN 201 - Intermediate Latin

Before signing up for Latin beyond 101 level, students should take the placement test that is available on Blackboard after contacting their advisors or the Academic Advising office.

The Latin placement test is divided into two parts:

  • The first part measures knowledge of Latin grammar;
  • The second tests ability to read and translate simple Latin sentences.

Students may use a dictionary for the translation. After the test has been completed, it is graded by the Latin instructor. Students are notified of their scores and the level of Latin in which they should enroll via e-mail.

Latin classes are offered at Lynchburg College as follows:

  • Latin 101 is offered in the fall term
  • Latin 102 is offered in the spring term
  • Latin 201 is offered in the fall term

Students are advised to plan their schedules accordingly. Those who are unable to attend during the summer may take Latin 101-102 during the regular academic year at Randolph College or Sweet Briar College through the auspices of the Tri-College Consortium Agreement (PDF).
