Students at a French film festival in Richmond
The objectives of the major and minor programs in French and Spanish at Lynchburg College are to increase the student's fluency in the language studied and to provide a broad understanding of the literature and culture studied.

This preparation provides the necessary background for careers in foreign language teaching,  bilingual education, government service, the international marketplace, and for graduate study in such fields as library science, literature, philology, and comparative literature.

Lynchburg College students wishing to study language and/or literature in ancient Greek and Italian or to continue their study of German and Latin beyond the intermediate level may do so at Randolph College and at Sweet Briar College through the auspices of the Tri-College Consortium agreement (PDF).

Work in the language laboratory constitutes part of the elementary and intermediate language courses. It is designed to teach and test the listening comprehension and speaking skills, the components of which are: auditory discrimination, auditory memory, pronunciation, and fluency.
