Faculty & Staff Instructions for CITI Certification

All faculty and staff seeking IRB approval for research proposals requiring full or expedited review must pass the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Certification. The training takes 2-4 hours to complete.

Step 1

Go to www.citiprogram.org and click the Register Here link for new users.

Step 2

You will need to complete several sections before clicking the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

  • Select your institution or organization – Select Lynchburg College from the Participating Institutions pull-down menu
  • Create your username and password – Create a username and password and verify your password
  • Security question and answer – Select a question from the Security Question pull-down menu and answer the question
  • Enter your name – Enter your first and last name
  • Enter your email address – Enter and verify your preferred email address
  • CME/CEU credits – Indicate whether or not you will be requesting any continuing education credits
  • Course Survey – Indicate whether or not you are willing to participate in a course survey

Step 3

On the next page you will need to complete the following sections before clicking the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

  • Institutional email address – Enter your Lynchburg College email address
  • Department – Enter the department under which your major falls
  • Role in Research – Select the role that most closely reflects your status as a researcher (i.e., principal investigator, clinical researcher, etc.)

Step 4

You will now need to choose your curriculum (a set of modules tailored to specific users).

Select the curriculum that best matches your research focus (i.e., Biomedical Research Investigator, Social & Behavioral Research Investigator, etc.).

You may also complete any of the other modules if you are interested in doing so.

Step 5

You have the option to affiliate with institutions other than Lynchburg College. Many institutions use CITI and some researchers need to complete CITI training for more than one institution. However, most researchers will simply click No on this page.

Step 6

You have now made it to the "Main Menu." In the future you will come straight to this page when you login to CITI.

To begin taking the course, click Enter under "My Courses."

Step 7

Now you are in the "Grade Book." This is the list of required modules you need to complete.

Complete the integrity assurance statement first. Once you’ve completed the assurance you will be able to access the first module. The other modules will become available as you complete each one.

Step 8

When you get to the module "Belmont Report and CITI Introduction," click Belmont Report (it will open in a new window).

The Belmont Report summarizes modern ethical standards of Human Subjects Research in 3 main principles: respect for persons (informed consent), beneficence (assessment of risks and benefits), and justice (selection of subjects).

Read the report before completing the quiz for this module.

Step 9

Proceed through the rest of the modules, taking the quizzes at the end of each. After taking a quiz, CITI will show you the correct answers and explain why an answer was incorrect.

You can look over the results and accept them to go on to the next module or you can view the module again to retake the quiz. Your quiz scores need to average at least 80% to pass the curriculum. You can take any quiz as many times as you like; CITI will take your highest score.

Notice that when you come back to the "Grade Book" it shows your completed modules, your scores, and the next module that is available to complete.

Step 10

After completing all the required modules, you can print your completion report. To print the completion report, return to the main menu.

The LC Human Subject Research Committee (IRB) is automatically notified that you have completed the training.
