Riding the Bus

climateThanks to the Dean of Students office and the Student Government Association, all Lynchburg College students, faculty, and staff are able to ride anywhere on the City of Lynchburg's bus system for free, year-round.

If you are new to this system, the best place for information is the web page of the Greater Lynchburg Transportation Company (GLTC), www.gltconline.com.

Riding the bus can be intimidating at first, but don't be afraid to try it. (The worst-case scenario is that you will enjoy a free ride around the city, and will return to where you started in about an hour!) In the process, you can save money and help the environment.

Bus-Riding Basics

Bring your LC ID - you'll need to show it when boarding.

There are 4 bus routes that service the college.  All of these routes also pass through the Kemper Street Transfer Station, which offers connections to the entire bus system as well as to Amtrak and Greyhound.

#6, accessible at intersection of Langhorne Lane and Sussex St (near the Spiritual Life Center)

#7, accessible at gravel, overflow lot on Thomas Road (near Hobbs Hall)

#8A, accessible at college entrance on Lakeside Drive, and depending on your destination, also immediately across the road on Old Forest

#8B, accessible across from the college entrance on Lakeside Drive

Buses often run 5-10 minutes late, so don't panic if you think you may have missed it.

Bus not going all the way to your destination? All GLTC buses are equipped with bike racks, so bring your bike to extend your ride.

Visiting Walmart

One of the most popular destinations is Walmart. Other businesses along the route include Kroger, King's Island, Applebee's, Given's Books and Cafe, Panera, and Smoothie King.

The LC to Walmart trip uses either route #8A (Monday - Saturday) or #8B (Monday - Friday).

To Walmart via Route #8A:

To save time, do not use the bus stop located at the college entrance on Lakeside Drive (that is the stop you would use to get to the Plaza). Instead, turn right and walk to the intersection, cross left over Lakeside, and then cross right over Old Forest. You will see the bus stop in front of you on the sidewalk along Old Forest.

The bus arrives approximately 20 minutes after the hour.

Pull the yellow stop cord as the bus is entering the Walmart parking lot.

From Walmart via Route #8A:

The bus arrives at the Walmart bus stop approximately 25 minutes after the hour.

Get off the bus at the bus stop at the Lakeside Drive entrance to LC. Pull the yellow stop cord as the bus is descending Lakeside Drive towards College Lake.

The last bus to return to LC leaves Walmart at 9:25 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays (the buses do not run on Sundays).

To Walmart via Route #8B:

The bus stop is located across Lakeside Drive at the entrance to the college.

The bus arrives approximately 50 minutes after the hour.

Pull the yellow stop cord as the bus is entering the Walmart parking lot.

From Walmart via Route #8B:

The bus arrives at the Walmart bus stop approximately 55 minutes after the hour.

Pull the yellow stop cord as the bus is approaching Lakeside Drive via Old Forest Road. Using this stop saves time as you avoid going through the plaza. The last bus to return to LC leaves Walmart at 7:55 p.m. on weekdays only.
