Experience/Background
I have been teaching at Lynchburg College since 1998 and have very much enjoyed my work with students and my faculty and staff colleagues. I have been in the field of sociology since high school and my passion for the subject has never wavered. My areas of specialization in the field are Courtship, Marriage and the Family, Race Socialization, Race and Ethnicity, Gender, and Domestic Violence.
Experience, I find, is a good teacher and so I often incorporate personal experiences into my lectures and discussions with students and encourage them to do so as well. This helps us understand the relevance of the concepts and theories that are learned in the courses I teach. I get as much from my students’ input as I hope they do mine.
Professional/Research Interests
My research on race socialization continues to be a work in progress. I am also interested in issues of gender equality, particularly, feminism and its related theories. Such theories need to be made clearer to everyday “folk” so that they can better understand how important it is to be treated equally regardless of one’s gender or biological sex. I am constantly researching information on domestic violence and why it continues to be one of the more serious social problems in the United States.
