How do I apply to the Summer Residential Governor's School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology?
The application process begins at the level of the local school district and is open to all rising junior and senior Virginia high school students (i.e. those students currently in tenth or eleventh grade). Application forms and guides for students and parents and for high school administrators, each updated yearly, are found on the Virginia Department of Education website below:
As the first application is made through the local school district, the deadlines of the first stage may vary from one school to another, though the Virginia Department of Education typically recommends the deadline for this first stage be in early January. In order to ensure that a potential applicant has not missed the local school deadline and is well-prepared for the application process, any students interested in applying to any of the Summer Residential Governor's Schools should discuss the matter with their high school guidance counselors in the fall of the year preceeding the summer in which they want to attend. The deadline for local school districts to pass their recommendations on to the Department of Education is usually in mid to late February. Nominees will be notified of their admission status typically by mid to late April.

What are the application deadlines for 2013?
The Virginia Department of Education recommends that local school districts set their deadlines for student applications in early January 2013. The 2013 deadlines for applications from local schools to be received at the Department of Education in Richmond is February 26, 2013. Nominees to attend a 2013 Summer Governor's School will be notified of their status by April 19, 2013.
When will I receive information on the Summer Residential Governor's School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology?
We will mail an information packet to accepted students in early to mid-May. It will include forms which must be returned to us by early June.
When is check-in? How do I complete the check-in process?
You should arrive on Sunday, June 30, between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to check into the residence halls.
We ask that you please complete the check-in process at Hall Campus Center Ballroom (3rd floor of Hall Campus Center) before the opening orientation which begins at 2 p.m. Light luncheon food may be purchased in the Dining Hall in Burton Student Center on campus, between 10:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., or you may wish to have lunch off campus before the 2 p.m. orientation session. The College Bookstore in Burton Student Center will also be open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on check-in day.
When you check in, you will receive your room key and a guest ID, which provides access to the residence hall and other campus facilities. After you check in, please move your car to the designated parking areas to provide others easy access to the check-in process. You may then move your personal belongings into your assigned room in McWane Hall.
A brief but important orientation program will be held at 2 p.m. in the Hall Campus Center Ballroom (3rd floor). Parents and guardians are not required to attend this session but are encouraged to do so. At this session, you and your parents or guardians will meet the faculty and resident advisors who will be working with you. Following the formal orientation, you and your parents will meet briefly with the faculty in their classrooms. The entire session should conclude by 3:30 p.m. Your parents and guardians may leave for home any time after the formal orientation program ends.
What about check-out?
The Summer Residential Governor's School will end on Saturday, July 27. Parents and guardians are invited to attend the Closing Ceremony, which will begin at 10 a.m. in the Hall Campus Center Ballroom. The ceremony will end by approximately 11 a.m.
All students should check out of the dormitories by 1 p.m. on July 27.
How can my parents get in touch with me?
Students are difficult to reach by phone during the day because they do not spend much time in their rooms. During the day, parents/guardians may phone the Summer Residential Governor's School office 434.544.8372 to leave messages for students. In the event of an emergency, campus security can always be contacted at 434.544.8100. Hall phones (numbers available at check-in) will also be available to receiving incoming calls.

Are cell phones allowed?
Use of cell phones is prohibited in class, on campus, and at any off-campus events. If you wish to bring a cell phone for use in your room and for emergency use, this will be permitted.

Should I bring a computer?
Lynchburg College residence halls are wired for Internet access. If you wish to bring a computer from home, you may connect to the Lynchburg College network in your room. Your computer must have an Ethernet port and you will need a network cable - Category 5, RJ45, Male/Male cable (25 ft recommended length). You must have either Windows (XP Professional or Vista) or a Mac operating system. To log into the campus network, all Windows updates must be loaded and anti-virus software (AVG, Symantec, or TrendMicro for Windows, Symantec for Mac) must be current.
What about my laundry?
Washers and dryers are available in the residence halls using a campus laundry card. Campus laundry cards may be purchased for $10 cash in the vending machine beside the ATM in the Burton Student Center. (The cost of the card is $3, and $7 is available for use in the washers and dryers on campus.) Please do not bring coins as the machines require the campus vending card. HE detergent must be used in these energy-efficient machines; the detergent may be purchased in the College bookstore.
Each wash cycle is $1.25. Each dry cycle is $1.25. Additional money can be added on the laundry card in $5 cash increments in the Burton Student Center beside the ATM. We encourage you to share a vending card with another student if using the laundry facilities will be minimal, since refunds are not available for laundry cards or for deposits made to the cards to operate the machines.
Is there an opportunity for field trips?
The Summer Residential Governor's School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology has several field trips over the course of the program. Typically, we have one trip to the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville early in the program. We travel for recreation purposes to a theme park. In 2013, we will be going to Busch Gardens. Let us know if you have a season pass to the theme park, and bring it with you to Governor's School.)
In addition, some of the courses take day-long field trips to other sites. In past years, courses have taken trips to labs at both Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia, as well as to the Pedlar River.
What is Teacher Recognition Day? Is it important for me to return this form?
The Summer Residential Governor's School provides an opportunity for participants to recognize those teachers whom they regard as having had the most profound impact on their education. We ask each of you to nominate a teacher [at any level in any subject] who has been your mentor, your inspiration, your advisor, your friend, and who has formed the greatest influence on your educational development. This individual should have demonstrated a caring, empathetic attitude while assisting you in achieving your educational goals. In your statement of nomination please give concrete examples or tell specifically why this teacher is special to you.
Because there are approximately 160 students at the Summer Residential Governor's School, you may nominate only one teacher. We will not be able to recognize more than one teacher per student.
The teacher whom you nominate will be invited to campus on Friday, July 19, to be recognized at a special dinner. Each teacher will receive a Summer Residential Governor's School Certificate in recognition of this special honor. Those teachers unable to attend will receive a letter of commendation and the Citation from the Summer Residential Governor's School.
Please think carefully about this nomination. It provides an opportunity for you to recognize and to thank that one teacher whom you believe has been most influential in your educational development.
