Experiential Learning

EL tagline

St. Lucia nursing students
LC nursing students conduct pre-school screenings for the St. Lucia Ministry of Education in summer 2008, combining two segments of experiential education - study abroad and service-learning.

In today's competitive job market, employers are looking to hire college graduates with experience that transcends the traditional classroom setting in addition to a strong academic background. Lynchburg College considers experiential learning a key component to a student's academic and professional growth. Such experience helps students clarify career interests and goals and builds their resumes. In fact, the College has included in its Strategic Plan a goal of 100 percent student participation in experiential learning.

A recent article in The Washington Post recognized Lynchburg College for its student body's strong participation rates in experiential learning, especially study abroad, as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement.

The College offers a wide array of options for students to engage in experiential learning.

  • Internships give students the opportunity to gain professional experience and explore career options related to their academic discipline.
  • Study abroad fosters the development of cross-cultural understanding and foreign language skills as well as preparing students for participation in our global society.
  • Faculty-student collaborative researchallows students to participate in research projects with College faculty by giving them hands-on experience in the laboratory and the field.
  • Community-based research engages students, faculty, and community partners in collaborative projects aimed at promoting positive change and social justice.
  • Service-learning provides students the opportunity to serve others in the community through service experiences that utilize knowledge and skills gained in a classroom setting.
