5th Annual Gifts for Gulu 5K Run/Walk

On Saturday, March 10th, Lynchburg College will join with Sports Outreach Institute, Riverside Runners, and the Orthopaedic Center of Central Virginia for the 5th annual Gifts for Gulu "Water for Life" 5K Run/Walk and Children's Fun Runs. Proceeds from the event will support efforts to provide clean drinking water and hunger relief to the people of Gulu, Uganda. The event will also include a canned food drive to support local hunger relief. For entry fees and online registration, please visit Riverside Runners. 5K race will begin at 9 a.m., three separate children's races will begin at 10 a.m.

Gender Studies Lecture

Lecture will address how both Oklahoma's statehood and Cherokee sovereignty were affected by the 1907 symbolic marriage of Miss Indian Territory and Mr. Oklahoma Territory. "Preventing Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Sexual Harassment," Dr. Dorothy Espelage, professor of child development and associate chair in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Espelage authored a 2011 White House Brief on bullying among LGBTQ youth and has appeared on many television news and talk shows, including The Today Show; CNN; CBS Evening News; The Oprah Winfrey Show; and Anderson Cooper 360. Thornton Reader

Doug Van Gundy, a poet (A Life Above Water, Red Hen Press) and the Spring Thornton Reader, will read from his work on Thursday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Hopwood Auditorium. Doug is also a musician of the old time genre, and plays fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. He has performed at the Kennedy Center and on NPR's Mountain Stage.
