William Gropper, born in New York City in 1897 to Jewish immigrants from Romania and Ukraine, was a virulent critic of social injustices and displayed political commentary throughout his art, which portrays subjects of poverty and unemployment, middle-class materialism, law makers and enforcers, and racial discrimination. Opening reception: Tuesday, October 16, 4 p.m.
During spring 2012, museum studies minor Gibb Zea '13 undertook an independent study to replicate 18th-century-style garments, such as the red coat worn by Samuel Adams in his 1772 portrait by John Singleton Copley. The project included research of styles, materials and construction, pattern-making, and hand-sewing using authentic materials and tools of a period tailor. Our day trip to Leesville Lake will include half a day of skills instruction in paddling sea kayaks, followed by a 3-5 mile trip. The $40 (LC students and employees) or $60 (all others) fee includes transportation, lunch, and rental of all equipment.
