The Lynchburg College Emergency Medical Service (LCEMS) is a Virginia state certified emergency healthcare service.  With thirty-one active student members, including seventeen Emergency Technicians (EMT), LCEMS receives over 130 calls each year.  We respond to each call immediately after being paged and when on the scene, we provide Basic Life Support (BLS) care.

An EMT and other members with varying levels of training are always on duty.  Each duty member carries a bag with supplies needed on a rescue call and the EMT on duty carries oxygen and airway tools.  If transportation to a hospital is needed, a Lynchburg City medic is called to handle the transport.

Training:
We require no experience to join! A CPR/AED class and an EMT-Basic (EMT-B) class are offered to all members on LCEMS. The College will help provide payment for the classes when a member of the squad signs a contract committing at least one year of service after his/her class. Throughout the year we also do continuous training and each member must stay up-to-date on new protocols and procedures.

The Purpose of LCEMS is

  • To provide volunteer, non-transport Basic Life Support (BLS) to the students, faculty, staff, friends, and visitors on College property; twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, during fall and spring semesters.
  • To improve the availability and response time of emergency care to the College community.
  • To increase a student's confidence and comfort by the recognition of persons responding to the medical emergency.
  • To provide health information.
  • To direct patients to the proper medical care facility.
  • To encourage members to reach the level of training known as emergency medical technician basic (EMT-B).
  • To provide, on request, an EMS crew for any College function.
