Name: Kurtise Wilkes
Hometown: Danville, Virginia
Undergraduate degree and school: Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science: Health and Human Performance Concentration in Pre-Physical Therapy, Virginia Commonwealth University
What her professor says: "Kurtise is our choice for student of the month because she represents herself and Lynchburg College very well in a variety of ways. She is a motivated and receptive learner. Her knowledge and retention of anatomy is exceptional. She always has a friendly smile and exhibits an extremely positive attitude by frequently offering to participate in class. She also shares her talents and precious time with the undergraduates by volunteering as an assistant coach with the women's basketball team. In all interactions we have had with Kurtise she has shown to be a perfect example of the type of student we have and soon will be proud to represent our program clinically."
- Stephen W. Elam, PT, DPT, CLT
What sparked your interest in physical therapy? When I was a senior in high school, I suffered from a high ankle sprain in a basketball game. This was a major concern for me as I had signed a full scholarship to play basketball on the collegiate level. My ankle sprain was serious enough for physical therapy to intervene to get my ankle back to high performance level. The dedication, hard work, and care that the physical therapist showed me was very inspiring; and I decided that this was the profession for me.
What's the most exciting part of the DPT program? Labs are my favorite aspect of the DPT program. I love getting hands-on experience, using equipment, and practicing techniques that I will actually use in the clinic.
What do you hope to do with your degree? It is my dream to become a Sports Physical Therapist in the professional or college sports arena. I have a sports background, and it is a big part of my life. I hope to use my degree to help athletes rehabilitate back to peak performance level after an injury.
What are some of your hobbies? I am an assistant coach for the Lynchburg College women's basketball program. I am an active participate in various intramural sports including soccer, basketball, and volleyball.
What is your favorite quote? "Talent can take you to elevated places, but character and integrity are the keys that will keep you there."
