Name: Tyler SmithTyler Smith

Hometown: Suffolk, Virginia

Undergraduate degree and school: B.S.Ed. Double Major in Psychology and Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine, from the University of Virginia

What her professor says: "Tyler has been chosen as the student of the month for her ability to not only meet all the challenges of PT school, but to also exceed expectations while conducting herself in a professional and gracious manner.

Tyler is engaged in her courses and fosters this behavior in her classmates. She has worked diligently to organize and implement a fundraiser for the Pittsburg-Marquette challenge. She has coordinated student volunteers, tapped into community resources, and executed the event, all in a seemingly effortless manner. Tyler is a perfect example of how students can transfer the behaviors and attitudes promoted within the program to engage the community and serve the profession.

Tyler truly is a stand out student and we are excited to see all that she will do for the program, the profession, and society in the coming years!" - Sara Knox, PT, DPT, GCS

What sparked your interest in physical therapy?
When I was 13, I tore my ACL playing basketball. I had ACL replacement surgery and then followed up with months of physical therapy. Unfortunately I knew I wouldn't make it back to finish the basketball season, but I was able to finish out the winter swimming season and spring lacrosse season through the help of the physical therapists.  With their knowledge and encouragement, I made a full recovery.

What's the most exciting part of the DPT program? I really enjoy being part of the LC DPT program. The learning style is very hands-on with the cadaver lab and the other PT practice-lab environments. The professors are always there to help and encourage our many different learning styles, and it's exciting to learn the how and why of what I've seen practiced in among different clinics.

What do you hope to do with your degree? I hope to work in Pediatrics. I have always enjoyed working with children, helping them grow and learn through different activities. I look forward to the challenges of making physical therapy fun and enjoyable for kids.

What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy traveling, hiking, swimming, kayaking, running and almost any outdoor activity. I love reading a good book when I find the time and always enjoy spending time with my friends and family.

What is your favorite quote? "Life is about not knowing, taking the moment, and making the best of it." - Unknown
