Graduate Assistant for Campus-Wide Programming

Reports to: Assistant Director of Student Involvement, Office of Student Activities

Qualifications

Enrollment in graduate studies program at Lynchburg College. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and some experience with programming and co-curricular activities is required. Interest in student and leadership development is preferred.

Term of Employment

Contracted from August 1, 2013 through the Friday following spring commencement exercises. Some evenings and weekend hours required.

Remuneration

Meal plan when school is in session; tuition remission up to 18 graduate hours per year; stipend and professional development opportunities.

Responsibilities

Coordinate the planning and implementation of the "Lynchburg Late Nite" Program and Weekend programming in general and co-advise the Student Activities Board with the Assistant Director of Student Involvement. The position will also assist, as directed, provide training, supervision and programming of the Panhellenic Council, Inter Fraternity Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Councils within the Greek Community.

Specific duties

  • Co-advise and meet regularly with the executive board members of the Student Activities Board, attending meetings as scheduled and permissible.  
  • Coordinate all aspects of weekend programming, including meeting with organization representatives responsible for the implementation of the events, design and distribution of publicity for the events, evaluation and assessment and budget.
  • Attend/supervise all LLN programs, Weekend Programs, and most Student Activities Board events.
  • Coordinate the production of the monthly newsletter as directed.
  • Co-advise with the Assistant Director of Campus Involvement the Panhellenic Council, InterFraternity Council and National Pan-Hellenic Councils, attending meetings and events as directed and permissible.  
  • Assist in the supervision of large campus wide events, such as Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend and other Student Activities Board sponsored events.  
  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

General duties

  • Hold 20 office hours per week.
  • Meet weekly with the staff of the Office of Student Activities.
  • Meet weekly with the Assistant Director of Campus Involvement.
  • Attend Friday or Saturday night program each week from 10 pm- 2 am or as scheduled. 
  • Attend weekly SAB meetings with Executive and Buzz Crew Meetings.
  • Attend weekly PC, IFC and NPHC meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Graduate Assistant for Leadership Programs and Special Projects

Reports to: Director of Student Activities, Office of Student Activities

Responsibilities

Oversee special leadership projects for the Office of Student Activities staff specifically the Anderson Leadership Conference, Leadership Awards, and LC LEADS program.  In addition, coordinates the revision of OSA brochures, manuals, training materials, resources and publications. 

 

Sanction Advisor

Reports to: Associate Dean of Students, Office of the Dean of Students

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree. Significant experience in Student Development preferred (e.g., judicial board member, Resident Assistant, student government, student activities). Must be accepted and enrolled in graduate-level course work at Lynchburg College. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred. During academic semesters, the Sanction Advisor may not hold other employment without prior approval from the Associate Dean of Students.

Term of Employment

The Sanction Advisor a ten-month position (August 1 – May 31).

Remuneration

For a full academic year appointment, the Sanction Advisor receives tuition remission for up to 18 graduate credit hours taken in a fiscal year, on-campus housing, a 10-meal plan, and a stipend of $6,000 (anticipated). 

Responsibilities

The Sanction Advisor is responsible for assisting in implementation of the student disciplinary process, including record-keeping, instructing and advising students regarding sanction completion, and promoting understanding of the Honor and Student Conduct Codes and Regulations. The Sanction Advisor is an integral member of the staff in the Office of the Dean of Students, participating as needed in initiatives related to student check-in/orientation, leadership recognition, and other Student Development functions.

Specific Duties

Administrative

  • Verify students’ completion of sanctions.
  • Complete administrative tasks associated with the student disciplinary process, including database entry, notations in students’ records regarding sanction completion, and correspondence.
  • Prepare sanction completion progress reports.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports regarding frequency and type of infractions, sanction completion, etc.
  • Maintain office hours (minimum 20 per week).
  • Assist in completion of routine office functions for the Dean of Students Office.

Educational

  • Develop and implement educational efforts (e.g., sanction modules, presentations, posters, brochures, website postings, other programs) to raise awareness and understanding of the Honor and Student Conduct Codes and Regulations and of safety-related topics.
  • Conduct weekly Service Planning Workshops for students required to complete community service sanctions.
  • Advise individual students as they complete sanctions, assisting with time management, identification of service opportunities, and use of College resources for support of educational success. 
  • Provide guidance and feedback to students as they develop educational programs/campaigns, research papers, etc. for sanction completion and evaluate final submissions to ensure quality and accuracy of work.

Student development and college-wide

  • Collaborate with and maintain effective communication with other offices involved in the student disciplinary process and sanction completion (e.g., SERVE Office, Campus Safety and Security, off –campus service agencies).
  • Assist with other projects implemented by the Dean of Students Office.
  • Assist in assessment efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Graduate Assistant for International and Multicultural Services (IMS)

Works in the International and Multicultural Services office to support the programs and services provided to Lynchburg College’s multicultural, international, first generation college students, and those who are Pell Grant eligible.

Remuneration

Stipend, tuition remission, room, and meal plan.

Required Skills

Bachelor’s degree; thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs; a positive and open-mined attitude; excellent English-language oral and written communication skills; a valid United States driver’s license.

Essential Duties

  • Commitment of an average of 20 hours per week in the office or at programs assisting with the daily operations of the office, advising student organizations, coordinating events, or presenting programs.  
  • Updates newsletters, brochures, flyers, and social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, and IMS webpage).
  • Serves as advisor to the special interest groups overseen by IMS (e.g. Black Student Association, Gay-Straight Alliance, Hispanic Society, Inclusive Alliance, International Society, and Love 146).  Assist with and attend meetings and events planned by these organizations unless in conflict with scheduled classes.  
  • Assists with coordination and implementation of new student orientation programs for populations served by IMS (e.g. Summer Transition Program (STP), CheckMates, Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR), and Expand Your Horizons.
  • Convenes and oversees work of the Multicultural Programming Committee by assisting with the planning and implementation of multicultural programming for the campus community (e.g. Hispanic Heritage month, Black History month, International Education Week, etc.).
  • Facilitates and leads delegations to student leadership conferences such as Anderson Leadership Conference, the Multicultural Leadership Conference, and the International Student Leadership Conference, or others that may be feasible.  
  • Advises students participating in the Academic Coaching Program (ACP) as needed.  
  • Maintains the IMS diversity bulletin boards in the Student Development hallway in Hundley Hall and stairwell in Burton Student Center.
  • Serves as Resident Director at International House, a multicultural living environment, where responsibilities include ensuring residents’ adherence to College housing policies and house rules, completion of and follow through with maintenance work orders, maintaining cleaning schedule and fees payment, and coordinating house programs.
  • Other duties as assigned or presented.

 

Graduate Assistant - SERVE Office

Reports to: Director of SERVE

Responsible for research, coordination of activities, and programs related to the promotion of service and service learning at Lynchburg College.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and enrollment in Lynchburg College masters degree program (MBA or EDHD). Undergraduate or post-graduate experience in study abroad, student services, and program coordination desirable.

Excellent human relation and English-language oral skills. Effective communication and relationship-building skills to be used on an individual basis and/or in small and large group settings. Excellent English-language reading comprehension and writing skills. Ability to proofread and edit copy. Good mathematical and analysis skills. Ability to work with a diverse population of students as well as with faculty, staff and parents.

Term of Employment

August 12, 2013, through May 19, 2014.

  • Help implement the policies set up by the already existing service recognition committee.
  • Conduct follow-up assessment of service and service-learning experiences from participating students and making recommendations for program enhancement based results.
  • Work with staff colleagues in Center for Community Development and Social Justice, the Bonner program, Student Development and other departments-as appropriate to promote community service and service learning at Lynchburg College.
  • Perform any other related duties as required, must be able to work well with faculty, staff, and students.

Responsible for research, coordination of leadership activities, and programs related to the promotion of service and service learning within the Bonner Program and AmeriCorps Lynchburg College.

Qualifications

Educational requirements: Bachelor's degree and enrollment in Lynchburg College masters degree program. Undergraduate or post-graduate experience in study abroad, student services, and program coordination desirable.

Special oral/written skills: Excellent human relation and English-language oral skills. Effective communication and relationship-building skills to be used on an individual basis and/or in small and large group settings. Excellent English-language reading comprehension and writing skills. Ability to proofread and edit copy. Good mathematical and analysis skills. Ability to work with a diverse population of students as well as with faculty, staff and parents.
