Twelve Lynchburg College students will be traveling to Rome and Avignon for spring break to study the Great Schism in the Catholic Church.

Dr. Phil Stump, professor of history, and Barbara Rothermel, director of LC's Daura Gallery, are leading the trip, which is part of a course examining European history and the church's role in the European power struggles over the centuries.

The study abroad experience focuses on the Avignon papacy and the schism in the Catholic Church. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Palais des papes in Avignon and other points of interest in southern France.

Course-related sites in the historically rich city of Rome include the Forum, the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Vatican Museum.
