Jennifer Knapp, a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter who has performed at Lilith Fair, is Christian and an “out” lesbian.
Lianna Carrera is a Huffington Post columnist and lesbian comedienne. She has performed at venues like the Laugh Factory and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. She is a 2007 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College.
The event is co-sponsored by Agudath Sholom, First Unitarian Church, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, University of Lynchburg MACs Office, and the LC Spiritual Life Center. The message of the jointly sponsored event is that a safe community of faith exists for you whether you are gay, straight, lesbian, transgender, or questioning, said the Rev. Stephanie McLemore, LC chaplain.
This is the second year local congregations have co-sponsored an event for National Coming Out Day and they plan to make it an annual event.
“We’re trying to target the young adult sector this time around,” said the Rev. Paul Boothby of First Unitarian.
The Rev. Audrey Connor of First Christian (Disciples of Christ) said she hopes other colleges will consider hosting future events.
