Healthy for Life

Lynchburg College is sponsoring "Healthy for Life" March 24-31, a weeklong focus on a healthy, active lifestyle culminating in a Field Day on March 31 from 9 a.m. to noon, which all students and city residents are welcome to attend.

The event follows on the heels of an announcement by Lynchburg Mayor Joan Foster who challenged city residents to lose 12 tons in 2012. Lynchburg ranks as one of the top 10 areas for obesity in the nation.

During the week, the College will be collecting cans for local food pantries and nonprofits with a goal to collect 5,000 cans and raise $5,000 to send 20,000 nutritional meals to Uganda via Stop Hunger Now and Sports Outreach Institute.

All events are open to the public. Canned goods may be dropped off at Turner Gymnasium throughout the week.


Healthy for Life - Lacrosse Day

Youth and high school lacrosse teams from the area will compete in matches on Shellenberger Field beginning at 9 a.m. LC women's lacrosse plays Bridgewater College at 1 p.m. followed by a nightcap game featuring LC men's lacrosse team vs. Washington & Lee at 7 p.m.


Stop Hunger Now at Depot Grille

The Depot Grille will donate a portion of the entire day's proceeds to LC's efforts to raise funds for Stop Hunger Now. Located at 10 Ninth Street in Lynchburg, 11 a.m. until restaurant closes.


Stop Human Trafficking

LC's Love 146 club is screening the film Call + Response in Westover at 8 p.m. Dr. Sabita Manian, professor of international relations, will speak to the group about human trafficking.


Park View Mission

LC will prepare a meal for the working poor at Park View United Methodist Church, located at Memorial Avenue and Wadsworth Street, 4 p.m.

Stop Hunger Now

LC's Stop Hunger Now food packing event will feature Scott Briggs, Society of St. Andrews, speaking on hunger awareness. Memorial Ballroom, Hall Campus Center, 7 p.m.


Kicks Butts Day Kickball Tournament

Join in LC's kickball tournament to stamp out smoking, Shellenberger Field, 8-10 p.m.


Healthy for Life Activity Field Day

LC athletic teams and campus organizations will hold clinics and field events for children and their families to enjoy together, including soccer, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, volleyball, football, relay races, yoga, carnival games, relay race, canvas paint toss, health tents, and booths including Lynchburg Health Department, Kick Butts Group, Lynchburg Grows, Healthy Food and Cooking Booths ,and Wimmer Chiropractic, 9 a.m. to noon. Registration at 8:30 a.m., Schewel Hall. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free admission with a canned good. Local vendors will have merchandise and food for sale. Rain location: Wake Field House.

Shamrock 5k Run/Walk
