About 400 participants and 50 exhibitors attended the Beard Center’s Annual Conference on Aging on June 3 with community sponsors including the Centra Foundation, Centra Mental Health Services, and Centra Rehabilitation and Senior Care Services.
Keynote speaker Dr. Peter Betz, medical director of Geriatric Psychiatry, Piedmont Psychiatric Center, Centra talked about normal mental and physical changes that occur with aging, along with those that are not normal, including depression and drug addiction.
Keynote speaker Missy Buchanan, author and columnist, talked about helping older Americans find purpose and joy as they age with tips from her recent book, Joy Boosters: 120 Ways to Encourage Older Adults.
Twenty-four workshops covered a variety of topics related to positive aging advocacy, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, and professional development.
