Job Description:

Work with The Sportsline radio show in the afternoon and evening. Help to book national, regional and local guests for the show. Research and develop topics for discussion on the show as well as helping to create and implement listener contests and screen listener calls. Assist with production elements of the show as well. Cover live sporting events in the area and the region and report back on the show. There also could be some opportunities to work with High School Football broadcasts on the technical, stats and possibly even as a sideline reporter.

News Reporter (2 positions - morning and afternoon/evening)

Job Description:

Work closely with News Director and Lynchburg’s Morning Show to report, write and read newscasts on the radio. Cover meetings and events in the community, interview newsmakers, pull sound bites from those interviews and incorporate them into news stories which the intern will write and produce for broadcast. These people will also work closely with the morning show to develop ideas and segments for the morning show, and help produce these ideas and segments.

Assist the sales manager and sales staff in developing strategies and presentations for client meetings. Help research trends in the industry and use reports to create pieces that can be used in sales kits and client meetings. Work with business manager on various projects for radio business as well as other businesses in the portfolio. Bedford Animal Shelter

Public Relations Internship

To accomplish the following goals:

  • Raise public awareness about the existence of the shelter as a great source of pets. Currently many county residents either automatically think of the humane societies in Lynchburg or Roanoke when they are looking to adopt dogs and cats.
  • Recruit volunteers to help at the shelter
  • Educate the public about the need to sterilize their dogs and cats

Needed:

  • Graphic and text logo
  • Flyers that could be easily reproduced for distribution at businesses or mailings (as in being included in the weekly packets sent home to schoolkids, or annual tax mailings)
  • Web features, such as Vine or slightly longer videos of happy adopters 
  • Anything else that a creative, bright young person could think of appropriate for a county animal shelter with limited resources. 

The audience for these materials would be both adults and youngsters. The latter is important as part of the educational campaign on spay/neuter as well as general responsible pet ownership.

Lynchburg Daily Bread

Nonprofit Marketing/Development Intern

For 30 years, Lynchburg Daily Bread has provided a hot meal to the needy of the Lynchburg area. They are the only soup kitchen in the area and serve a free, nutritious lunch 365 days a year.  In 2012, we served 53,313 meals to the homeless and hungry.

Position: The Non-Profit Marketing/Development Intern has the opportunity to participate in and learn about all aspects of running a non-profit social service agency, including donor development, fundraising, grant & foundation research, and vendor & volunteer management as well as responding to the day-to-day opportunities and needs. Reporting to the Executive Director, the intern will be responsible for developing the donor database, providing customer service to clients, supporting the volunteer coordinator, and working with all levels of staff to provide meals.

Open to all majors, but applicants should have an interest in human services, nonprofit management, marketing, fundraising and/or event planning with a special interest in the issues of homelessness, hunger/food security, and economic development.

This is an unpaid position.

Responsibilities:

  • Update/Expand  donor database by researching potential donors, address changes and donor information
  • Creating and maintaining archive of client testimonials for inclusion in thank-you packets, including soliciting and writing stories
  • Develop new and creative ways to market the Daily Bread
  • Spring semester interns: assist in the publicity and coordination of a 4 mile race (fundraiser)
  • Process returned mail, email bounces, address change requests
  • Handle sensitive and/or confidential documents and information

Responsibilities: Write, edit, and format technical documents that describe the operation, maintenance, and installation of critical communication radios and networks. Harris supplies radio systems and networks worldwide to first responders - police and fire departments, military installations, and local and state governments. The Product Documentation Management group works with engineers to document these products. The intern selected will work with a professional, experienced group of writers, learning the craft of writing for a technical audience. In addition, the intern will work with engineers to collect input and review comments prior to publication.

Skills Required: Self-starter, strong verbal, written communication, and organizational skills, Microsoft Word and Office Suite, self-confidence. Experience with graphics software preferred but not required. Complete one year of college English and/or technical writing courses.

  • producing commercials
  • assisting in booking and calling guests before interviews
  • participating on the air occasionally

Internship for summer/fall 2012

The ideal candidate is interested in advancing women's rights in our community, specifically working on initiatives to prevent/decrease domestic violence, dating violence, and bullying.

Community outreach and public relations are a significant part of the internship. Must be willing and eager to learn more about human services and have the ability to work autonomously on projects. Creativity, innovative thinking, and a positive attitude is required! An interest in national and international women's rights issues is desired.
