Sports EVERYWHERE!!

Posted on 11/19/2009

This weekend is a great one to be an LC Hornet! Of course every weekend is a great time to be one, but this past week, our field hockey, women's soccer, and men's soccer teams made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament! What this means is that we have won our conference and have been granted the opportunity to compete against other division winners from different states.

Lynchburg College is in the ODAC conference for athletics and competes at a Division III level. On campus, we have all kinds of different opportunities for those interested in sports. We have everything from our varsity teams (we have 21) to our 9 club sports and countless intramural offerings. There are few nights when there is not a game going on, either on the field or in the gym. Depending on the season too, there are tons of opportunities to get a taste of all kinds of sports.

A lot of people usually wonder what the difference is between the types of sports we offer. I will give you a quick summary. The varsity teams are the ones that represent the college in the ODAC and have a coach hired by the school. Club sports are a little less competitive but still have a faculty advisor to lead and coach the team. A club sport is for you if you want to have pretty consistent involvement in a sport but don't want it to take up too much time. Depending on the sport, club teams still travel to other schools and participate in tournaments and still practice more than once a week. Intramurals are the next step down from that. You don't have to have any kind of skill at the sport you are playing and the only people you compete against are people from the school. There are several different leagues, Co-ed, and then women's and men's leagues that are broken up into pools and then play each other. This is the less competitive alternative for people who just want to get out there and run around and have fun with their friends. I am not saying that it doesn't get competitive, because it definitely does, and winning an intramural sport can gain you some major bragging rights for the next year!

Flag football play-offs are tonight to decide the champions and get ready for TURKEY BOWL (but more on that later)! All in all though, it's been a pretty busy time of year for our sports teams, of all levels of competitiveness. We have some seasons coming to a close with our teams representing us for the NCAA tournament, and at the same time Men's basketball won their season opener again Ferrum College this weekend! Yes, it's a great week to be a Hornet! GO BURG!
