Wisdom at Work: Resources for the 50+ Job Seeker
Due to the recent economic downturn, changes in workforce needs, and the increased focus on workplace technology, finding a job is often difficult, if not impossible for the 50+ job seeker.
To help older job seekers understand and navigate the new job market and overcome job search challenges, “Wisdom at Work: Resources for the 50+ Job Seeker” was launched on June 20, 2013. The program is a collaborative initiative by the Beard Center on Aging at Lynchburg College, Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board, and the Virginia Employment Commission.
“Wisdom at Work” is a program designed to offer support, job search tips, basic computer training, and other useful information to job seekers ages 50 and over. Topics to be covered during the year will include, but not be limited to: local resources, job hunting tips, surviving unemployment, the computer job search, self esteem, age discrimination, successful interviewing, resume development, and more.
After a 45-minute educational program, 50+ job seekers will have the opportunity to meet with speakers and other employment professionals (when available) and network with other 50+ job seekers. Handouts on job search techniques and local resources will also be available to attendees during each meeting.
- To support workers and job seekers of 50+ years of age

- To promote the value of older workers in the community
- To reduce age discrimination in Region 2000
- To link 50+ community members with local resources, age-friendly jobs, and employment support
