The World at Night

Posted on 03/31/2008

I believe I have found a new favorite web site.

The World At Night (http://www.twanight.org) is a project to assemble photographs of the world's most beautiful and historic sites, set against backdrops of stars, planets, and celestial events. The title of the article in Sky & Telescope Magazine that alerted me to this says it quite well: Earth and Sky United.

We do live on a beautiful planet (of course we are biased), with beauty that we have created and beauty that is utterly indifferent to our presence. When we look up just enough to see the sky, but not so far that we ignore the Earth, we have just the right perspective, I think. We are made of dust, but that dust was created inside the fiery heart of a star.
