Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Honor Society in Sociology, derives its name from the first letters of the 3 Greek words that together signify the Society's goal: to study humankind for the purpose of service.

Alpha Kappa Delta's stated purpose is to promote human welfare through developing scientific knowledge that may be applied to the solution of social problems.

Eligible undergraduate and graduate students demonstrate high academic achievement in the field of sociology.

AKD was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California by Emory Bogardus. In the following year, Dr. Bogardus invited other sociology departments to establish chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta. Today, there are more than 500 chapters of the Society. Our chapter at Lynchburg College was founded in 1988.

2012 Inductees

The Department of Sociology and Criminology inducted 10 new members into Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) in the spring of 2012.
