Outdoor Recreation Minor

If you have an interest in the outdoors, teaching, or developing leadership experience, the outdoor recreation minor is for you. Whether you want to lead others in a front country, challenge course, or into the back country, this minor will give you the leadership, technical, and facilitation skills you need.

You can pair this minor with any of a variety of majors – from health and physical education to business administration.

What Will I Study?

The minor includes classroom-based courses on philosophy and leadership ethics with field-based courses on canoeing and kayaking, backpacking, rock climbing, challenge courses, scuba diving and other outdoor sports.

What Kind of Job Can I Get?

The outdoor recreation minor can help you prepare for a career with outdoor organizations like:

  • Outward Bound (OB)
  • National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
  • International Wilderness Leadership School (IWLS)
  • Boy Scouts of America
  • Girl Scouts of the USA
  • National Park Service
The outdoor recreation minor taught me critical thinking, conflict resolution, and risk management.
