  • Richard Burke with Chinese calligraphy studentsDr. Richard C. Burke recently travelled to Guangdong Province in the south of China to give lectures at three universities and a high school there. He also met informally with students, faculty, and administrators at the three universities. Foshan University hosted his visit; four professors from Foshan have each spent a semester in residence at Lynchburg College in the past two years. Besides giving three lectures at Foshan University, Dr. Burke also spoke at Zhaoqing University and Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, as well as at Zhixin High School, a prominent private school in Foshan that was founded in 1921 by Sun Yat-Sen. The topics of Dr. Burke’s lectures covered topics including American literature and values, American patriotism, and life in the U.S. in the 1950s and ‘60s. Dr. Burke was in China from April 12 to April 19; he visited the cities of Zhaoqing, Foshan, and Guangzhou.
  • Dr. Laura Long’s novel Out of Peel Tree was selected as a Finalist for three 2015 book awards: the Balcones Fiction Prize, the IndieFab Award in Literary Fiction, and the Weatherford Award in Fiction. In 2014-15 she presented creative writing at the University of Houston-Downtown, the Houston Poetry Festival, and the Virginia Festival of the Book, and gave a paper on the panel “The Research Behind the Writing” at the annual AWP Conference (Association of Writers and Writing Programs). Her writing appeared in Kestrel, Necessary Fiction, r.kv.r.y quarterly literary journal, and other venues. She taught as guest faculty at the MFA Low-Residency Program in Creative Writing at West Virginia Wesleyan.
